The National Institute for Cardiac Education (N.I.C.E. Heart Charities)
is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization (Fed ID # 65-0902743) dedicated
to raising funds and awareness for underserved cardiac issues. Once
we identify areas of cardiac medical need we can react quickly and
without undue delay. We are primarily supported by HealthwoRx (a.k.a.
Florida Institute for Cardiovascular Care): a prominent medical
practice in Broward County, Florida comprised of more than thirty
doctors. We also get support from fundraising events, donations
and contributions that are gifted to us from generous individuals,
foundations and businesses. N.I.C.E. became active in September
of 2004 with our Angel Heart Program.
Angel Heart Program- The Voice
for SCD Victims
In 2004 news reports came to our attention about several teenagers
that collapsed playing school sports and died from sudden cardiac
arrest (SCA). Many of the children and adults that died from SCA
could have been brought back to life by a shock to the heart delivered
with a small hand held defibrillator. Unfortunately the device was
not available for these victims and when the paramedic ambulances
arrived it was too late. NICE realized that there was an urgent
need for bringing awareness and placing Automatic External Defibrillators
(AEDs) in public gathering areas. We lived up to the challenge by
becoming one of the major advocates for SCA victims NICE quickly
began a campaign to purchase and donate AEDs to youth athletic fields
to assure that the devices would be readily available to kids that
may be at risk due to congenital heart muscle disease, due to arrhythmia
or due to a low-impact blunt trauma to the chest that can occur
from sport activities.
The Angel Heart Program focused on fundraising activities for the
purpose of buying AEDs and donating them to locations where there
is a high probability for cardiac emergency.
N.I.C.E. follows the guidelines set by the American Heart Association
and the recommendations of the local government officials when selecting
the organizations to receive donated AEDs. Additionally, NICE donated
a portion of their proceeds to the Cardiac Care Unit of the Joe
DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation
